iPhone accessories compatibility index 1 Year ago
[Note: Device compatibility may be improved by firmware updates, which can be applied by clicking the “Check for Updates” button in iTunes while the device is connected. Note, however that firmware update 1.1.1 will disallow use of third-party native applications and can be removed. We’re interested in hearing if your devices were made compatible or incompatible by the 1.1.1 update — please let us know.]

The following a list of accessories built for the iPod that are compatible (or incompatible) with the iPhone. Most iPod accessories that use the 30-pin connector — such as chargers and speakers — may also be compatible with iPhone, even though they haven’t been certified as ‘Works with iPhone.’

The most problematic accessories are those susceptible to radio frequency (RF) interference from the iPhone’s signal — particularly speaker systems. In some cases, the interference can be eliminated by putting the iPhone in Airplane mode (from the Settings pane), though some devices will still suffer from improper operation (usually distorted sound). Some third-party device audio jacks also have problems fitting into the iPhone’s rubber-sheathed connector. Another problematic group of accessories are those that are designed to charge the iPod and send audio-out to a car speaker system. Most charge the iPhone, but cannot generate audio output.

Please let us know which of your iPod accessories work with the iPhone, and which do not.

Categories are as follows:

* Bluetooth headphones
* Bluetooth headsets
* Car kits, Bluetooth: Built-in and aftermarket
* Car kits, wired: Built-in and aftermarket
* Charging docks/chargers

Bluetooth headsets

* Motorola H300 Bluetooth headset — Incompatible Generates significant audio distortion.
* Motorola H700 Bluetooth headset — Compatible Can pair and be used with the iPhone. Billy Gore writes: “When answering a call I’m given the choice of using the speaker, phone, or headset. Of couse, no voice dialing.”
* Motorola HS550 Bluetooth headset — Compatible
* Motorola HS850 Bluetooth headset — Incompatible Fails to automatically re-pair when temporarily moved out of range.
* Jabra BT130 Bluetooth headset — Compatible Works relatively well.
* Plantronics Discovery 665 — Compatible

Car Bluetooth kits: Built-in and aftermarket

* Sony Ericsson HBC-30 — Semi-compatible The automatic answer function cannot be used with the iPhone. In order to answer a phone call, the user must slide the unlock function, answer the phone, select the speaker function, then select the HCB-30 from the list of available devices. Alternatively, you can press the phone icon on the small control panel of the HCB-30 to answer.
* Land Rover LR3 — Compatible Nathan Rosenberg writes: “My phone works great through the LR3’s integrated Bluetooth speaker phone, including the dial pad and off switch in the truck.”
* Audio A8 built-in — Compatible
* Anycom HC110 — Incompatible
* Mercedes E320 — Compatible There is a face plate at the bottom of the adapter. Â A code is under that plate, and you need it to enter as a security code when pairing the iPhone with the Bluetooth adapter. Turn on the iPhone Bluetooth network search before turning on the car (Thanks, Nancy)
* Toyota Camry Hybrid — Compatible Bluetooth is standard with the Camry Hybrid, and iPhone Atlas reader Mitch reports that the iPhone works well with it. Instructions for operation: 1.Turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone 2. Press the Talk button on the steering wheel 3. Speak the command “Setup” 4. The car’s voice walks you through the rest - setting a pairing code, adding a new phone, etc.
* Toyota Prius — Compatible On-screen instructions take you through the pairing process. Once paired, incoming calls are routed to the car’s speaker and microphone.
* BMW ULF — Semi-compatible Pairs with the iPhone and the address book syncs. However, a reader writes: “But when I make a call from the car or the iPhone while paired, the iPhone shows the BMW ULF as the default, and then drops the pairing and the audio is on the iPhone. When I receive a call it rings over the cars speakers, I can answer it with the car’s controls but, it then drops the pairing and the audio is on the phone again. In both instances once I terminate the call, the iPhone repairs with the the bluetooth in the car.”

Wired Car kits: Built-in and aftermarket

* Belkin Auto Kit for iPod w/ Dock Connector — Compatible Connect the audio-out and make sure music is playing before connecting the power via the dock connector. Also, make sure that the Belkin auto charger must be getting power from the car before connecting the dock connector to the iPhone.
* BMW integration kit — Semi-compatible Cannot charge the iPhone
* Dension IceLink Plus iPod kit– Semi-compatible iPhone fits in the cradle, and playlists are accessible using radio functions. Reader Ken writes: “When a call comes in the song volume mutes and the phone chime is audible via the speakers, with no audible ‘cellular’ feedback from the speakers.” Cannot charge iPhone.

* Scion tC 2006 iPod head unit — Compatible Small amount of audio interference. Has 30-pin dock connector, allowing user to navigate tracks using the steering wheel controls and the head unit itself using its 1-line display. Also charges the phone. (Thanks, Tyler Slaymaker)
