Many potential iPhone buyers from the Netherlands, europe, are wondering if they can surf the internet on their GPRS networks with an iPhone. They asking this because there are no EDGE networks available anymore. KPN took over and shutdowned Telforts EDGE network. Telfort WAS the only EDGE provider. After this KPN action, the Netherlands had only GPRS and UMTS providers.
Well, we tested it today for the Dutch folks and these are the results:
Test ingredients:
-1 x iPhone from the US (unlocked, fw 1.0.2)
-1 x T-Mobile SIM card with GPRS internet subscription.
First we inserted the T-Mobile card in the iPhone. Then we had to punch in the 4 digit PIN code to activate the phone function for this card. The reception bars shows full signal from T-Mobile. Thats good! Now we fill in the EDGE (GPRS) settings to allow internet access.
Settings => General => Networks => EDGE

APN => internet
Username => leave empty
Password => leave empty
Then we shutdown the WIFI function to be sure we are only have GPRS access.
Settings => WIFI =>WIFI "OFF"

The "E" for Edge is lit, thats good. We started Safari and opened a website. And...Yep are online! Conclusion: It works without problems ! You can surf the internet in the Netherlands with an unlocked iPhone on dutch GPRS networks.
